What an eventful week in the webvid studio! We found ourselves working with former talkSPORT and LBC drive time presenter James Whale on a pilot for a brand new online programme titled ‘Whale’s Weekly’. This was an exciting opportunity for all the webvid team, as online tv shows is something as a company we are passionate about; myself in particular having experienced working on ‘The 5:19 Show’ with the BBC back in 2009. ‘Whale’s Weekly’ in it’s current state is fairly simple and straight forward to keep production costs down, however working closely with James we have developed some interesting and exciting content ideas to work into the show in future.

The format of the show as it currently stands is James covering a few of the weeks top news stories and using his twitter account @THEJamesWhale for your thoughts and feedback. I think it is fair to say for a pilot episode, we were all exceptionally pleased with the overwhelming positive response to the show. We’ve received a large amount of positive feedback and nearly clocked up 2000 unique views on YouTube in only 3 days. We found ourselves up bright and early on Monday morning and heading up to Rugby to shoot on location at the lovely Renatus clinic. On a side note, I’m not sure how we manage it, but every time we go to shoot in Rugby, it’s snows! Fail! Fortunately due to our previous experience with the last production shoot for 3D Lipo and with careful pre production planning, we were able to get everything done without any problems. This allowed us to effectively focus on the shooting schedule and clearly communicate what the client wanted in the new trade show video.

Vince is already working hard in the studio on all the new motion graphics for the 3D Skintech procedures and I’m currently sorting through and editing all the new footage, we’ve got a lot! But it is looking fantastic, we really put the Canon 5D Markii through it’s paces and the Glidetrack. I’m excited about getting the finished video online, so I can show you the quality of the end product.

Thanks for stopping by. As I’m sure the blog title gives away we’ve been visiting the Excel London for lots of trade shows recently. We’ve been extremely busy out and about, so I thought it was about time I gave you a little update.

Professional Beauty

We’ve continued our excellent working relationship with 3D Aesthetics and headed over to there trade show stand at Professional Beauty to do a short snappy promotional video. This gave them an overview of activity at the stand, which will be used to send out to clients and help promote the brand and products. If you look carefully, you might spot our boss Neil Bentley having the 3D Skintech treatment (he just couldn’t resist).

We were really pleased to see our first trade show video for 3D Aesthetics playing at the stand. The video was produced for the 3D Lipo machine and generated a lot of interest at the stand and really stood out from the crowd. Pre-production has already begun on the second trade show video for 3D Skintech which we will be shooting next week.

BVE 2013

Later in the week we found ourselves geeking out at the Broadcast Video Expo back at the Excel. Myself, Neil and Vince were exploring all the various pieces of equipment and visiting seminars on offer at BVE this year.

Some of our personal highlights included…

Blackmagic Design Camera – We’ve had our eye on this for quite some months and it was generating a lot of buzz at the expo. The amazing thing about Blackmagic is the quality of image it delivers for the price, another plus was that we could use all our Canon 5D lenses on the Blackmagic. However it’s not perfect, I mean the shape of it is not ideal for filming at all, it kind of reminded me of an old school polaroid camera. The internal battery is also pretty poor, but credit to the sales guy at the stand he tried to spin the fact that it has an internal battery is a plus point when you compare it to something like a RED camera.

Adobe Theatre – Awesome, informative and super crowded; full to capacity as it is every year. We are currently in the process of upgrading our post production set ups, so we had a lot of questions we wanted answering about CS6. We were very excited by what was put on show and intend to stick with Adobe and will be upgrading to Adobe Creative Cloud. However one thing we did find unusual was Adobe’s hardware partner NVIDIA were pushing the new NVIDIA Quadro graphics cards for use with CS6. But if you do a little research online people in the media business is recommending buying NVIDIA GTX500 and 600 series cards….weird.

Cinegear Pro – We checked out this stand just by chance as we are looking for new rigs for our DSLR’s. We were pleasantly surprised by what these guys had on offer for the price and especially when you compare them to Zacuto. We were able to hold and test out the rigs, to really feel the build quality. Not to mention the guys on the stand were incredibly helpful and answered all our questions. They have a store on Waterson Street in London, highly recommend them.

Did you see the meteor shower that hit Russia? We’re also meant to be having one fly right past Earth again tonight, crazy! I’m telling you people, aliens are coming! It’s like ‘War of the Worlds’….clearly lol

Anyway, we’ve been in a few discussions recently which are beginning to pop up more and more about clients wanting to produce professional online only, tv series style content. Be it an on the sofa, magazine style sort of show or a documentary following a companies story, it can be anything. It’s pretty interesting, despite a lack of understanding in some parts of the business world, others are becoming much more forward thinking and creative with the ways to present themselves and/or their business.

The BBC have been playing with online only tv show content idea for a few years now. I was fortunate enough to be a small part of ‘The 5:19 Show’ back in 2009 which was an online tv show aimed at teens, but it was pulled due to budget cuts. However in 2012 they experimented with online only once more with BBC Three Comedy ‘Impractical Jokers’ and have since announced that they plan to trail up to 40 hours of content across a range of genres to be put online before reaching TV screens this year.

This is a clear indication to us that online video is about to become a whole lot more influential. The BBC aren’t the only ones at it either, everyone knows YouTube is the hub of all things internet video and since it’s acquisition by Google in 2006 it has gone from strength to strength. YouTube has become more powerful, more profitable and more innovative and now clearly sensing a shift in the winds; ‘Advertising Age’ has reported that paid channels on YouTube could be introduced as early as April, and the site has already reached out to its channel partners.

This would potentially allow YouTube to take a cut of sales. Following the success of Netflix, Hulu and LoveFilm, people are now comfortable with the concept of paying a subscription for video content online. Many content creators would like to be able to charge a small monthly fee for access to their content as well, which is now why we are getting enquiries about producing effective, beautiful online TV style content.

This is very exciting for us in the webvid studio because it shows an empowerment to content creators, a lot of creativity without the television regulation and it can all be done for a much lower cost for our clients than a show made solely for broadcast. Aaaaaaaaaaaand we’re back! Sorry if you’ve missed us.

If you’ve called in the past few days, you’ve probably been unable to hear our lovely voices and that’s because myself and the rest of the webvid team have been hard at work refitting our studio. We’ve been making space for the exciting new addition of our very own Gold Series Vocal booth, courtesy of vocalbooth.com. But we are now back online and ready to get going with all our projects and take your enquiries.

So a little bit of backstory and geeky stuff about the Vocal Booth. Our Vocal Booth was previously used by EMI Music, however in unconventional fashion we had to drive in a big white Transit Van from out little studio in South West London all along the M4, across the Seven Bridge and to South Wales. FYI for anyone who would be interested in obtaining a Vocal Booth themselves in the future, the panels are relatively heavy, in particular the frame containing the booths door weighs nearly as much as a small elephant (slight exaggeration). Fortunately we are made of strong stuff here at webvid and got it home safe and sound.

Assembly of the flatpack booth took the team about 2 to 3 hours, which is not bad considering we had no instructions and had never built one before. Once constructed it offers ample space for one or two people, a mic, mixing desk, processors and a laptop. The booth has dual-layer single wall design, acoustic foam interior, a solid wood floor and it’s expandable. The end result, looks and sounds amazing! We will now be capable to produce even higher quality voice over/podcast work. Perhaps we might even record an album, who knows or dares to dream

Right! I best be off, we need to wire up the mixing desk and microfone to get this show well and truly on the road!

Today it’s all been about telling a different story. A story that defies belief. The webvid team have been up in Zone 2, Oval, to meet up with leadership development coach and published author Mel Carnegie.

Mel is an inspirational woman who has written an autobiography that is gaining 5 star reviews on Amazon. People who have read it are sending in messages of support and thanks from all over the world. It’s self published and on course to become a bestseller. Magic 105.4 in London has picked up on it very early and is ready to feature an extended interview with Mel – introducing her talents to the Capital. Angie Greaves (Magic Drivetime) has made this a recommendation for all lit lovers in London.

Mel contacted us to create a simple web video for her brand new website and her author page on Amazon. We constructed a conversational scenario, over a coffee, and filmed a very honest and transparent chat. At times it was highly emotional. Mel cares about helping people through her own experiences. It’s not fake and that’s rare – especially in a world full of ‘Life Coaches’.

We fully expect to turnaround this 3-4 minute video within a week, so make sure you keep checking the ‘our work’ page to watch it in full.
